Chapter Eleven

Crystal barged into Lauren’s office unannounced. Lauren’s head popped up immediately from the computer. “Crystal, was my assistant not available?”

Crystal dropped her designer bag on the office chair across from Lauren’s desk. She had spent many hours working with Lauren going over reports or shooting the breeze after a long day. It was in her office, located on the second floor, that they had first discussed Russell. She recalls clearly, in the conversation, she had promised Lauren, she would always be faithful to him.

Years later, and through promotions, Lauren Bennett-Winters moved to the fourth floor of The Lofton Foundation as an executive. Only executive offices were located on the top floor. With Lauren’s promotion to Assistant Director, she was not able to take Crystal along as her administrative assistant. The position called for her and Belle to share the same assistant making it easier for them to distribute their workload.

Crystal remained on the second floor for one month before rejoining the secretarial pool. With Lauren’s marketing position eliminated, that left Crystal without a superior. She felt inadequate in these setting because the level of the conversations tended to go over her head or bore her to death. This caused more strife between her and Russell to the point where she was accusing him of trying to impress Lauren with his career move. She claimed he did it with the expectation of luring her away from Marcus.

Soon, the notion of snagging a wealthy man reemerged. She let Russell do whatever interested him and she began hanging out with old girlfriends at high-end nightclubs and bars. The bouncers allowed highly attractive women access to VIP lounges with no questions asked. It didn’t matter she only had ten-dollars in her purse because depending on how she was dress, and whom she was trying to impress, her hand would never reach for her wallet to pay for anything.

Then Crystal hit the jackpot. She attended a private house party one night with her girlfriends, thrown by a sports agent. There she met and made nice with up and coming baseball star, Percy Watkins. A MLB scout came across him playing baseball while in his last year of
